According to the findings of a new study, one in six big IT projects go over-budget by an average of 200%.
The study was conducted by Oxford University and McKinsey, who analysed nearly 1500 large-scale global IT projects that cost more than $170 million.
They found that while most IT projects ran less than 30% over budget, one in six experienced average cost over-runs of 200% and delays of 70%.
Oxford University and McKinsey also found that spending in the IT sector was three times more likely to spiral out of control than spending in other sectors that require substantial investment, such as construction.
