

A statutory instrument giving the Information Commissioner's Office the power to issue large fines for data-protection offences has now become law.
Using its new powers, which came into effect on the 6 April, the data watchdog can fine businesses up to half-a-million pounds if they suffer serious breaches that expose their clients' personal information.
