The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection watchdog, has revealed in a statement that it has uncovered more than 800 data security breaches in UK organisations since 2007.

Having recently been awarded the power to fine companies who experience data breaches up to £500,000, the ICO has warned that it will use these tough sanctions if companies fail to report future breaches.
