A transport minister in the new coalition government has urged UK employers to adopt more flexible working practices and allow staff to work from home at least once every two weeks.

Norman Baker, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Transport, believes an increase in home working will reduce transport congestion and pollution, eliminate rush hours and help the government create a low-carbon economy.

The Minister also believes that allowing staff to spend one day in every ten working from home will reduce stress levels and help employees achieve a better work-life balance.

UK employers are much more proactive in encouraging their staff to work remotely and using mobile technology than their European counterparts, a new survey has found.

Conducted by Citrix Online, the survey of 3,000 public and private sector organisations found that mobile and remote working has increased in almost half of UK businesses in the past five years, compared to only 31% of businesses in France and 27% in Germany.  The survey also found that 68% of UK companies actively encourage their staff to adopt mobile working, compared to only 32% of German companies and 26% of French companies.
