UK consumers spent £38bn online in 2009

According to the Centre for Retail Research (CRR), UK consumers spent £38bn online in 2009, accounting for almost a third of all European online sales.

CRR has additionally calculated that online sales now account for almost 10% of total retail sales in the UK, and has predicted that online sales in the UK will hit £42.7bn in 2010.

Web users turning to Chrome

According to the latest browser statistics, Internet Explorer is still the most commonly-used browser, but web users are increasingly using alternative browsers such as FireFox and Google Chrome.

According to www.w3counter.com, Internet Explorer’s web browser market share dropped from 52.4% in August 2009 to 48.7% in February 2010, while, over the same time period, Google Chrome’s market share almost doubled, rising from 3.6% to 6.8%.

Is the Internet going mobile?

Despite the recession, and the fact that overall sales of mobile phones fell last year, the rise and popularity of high-end, Internet-enabled smartphones is showing no sign of abating.

According to the last sales figures,  Smartphone sales hit 172.4 million in 2009, a year-on-year rise of almost a quarter.

Microsoft UK’s biggest brand

According to the latest survey conducted by independent branding arbiter Superbrands, Microsoft is now the biggest business brand in the UK.

Microsoft has taken over in first place in the annual business brand survey from Google, which has dropped to fifth on the list.
