More than one million iPhone users downloaded Opera Mini, Opera’s new web browser for mobile phones, just a day after it was approved on 13 April, making it the most downloaded free application on Apple’s App Store in 22 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Australia and Japan.

ICO data protection powers come into effect

A statutory instrument giving the Information Commissioner's Office the power to issue large fines for data-protection offences has now become law.

Using its new powers, which came into effect on the 6 April, the data watchdog can fine businesses up to half-a-million pounds if they suffer serious breaches that expose their clients' personal information.
